A commercial motorcycle rider died after being hit by a truck carrying flour on the Sabo, Onimalu-Itamaga road in the Ikorudu region of Lagos State.

The event, taking place during the initial hours of Sunday, was verified by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

The agency’s spokesman, Taofiq Adebayo, issued a statement acquired by PUNCH Metro It has been reported that the rider was allegedly exceeding the speed limit when he experienced brake failure and collided with the back of a moving articulated lorry, resulting in his immediate demise.

As he stated, the LASTMA officials, arriving at the location as initial responders, promptly intervened to handle the circumstances.

“The harrowing incident involved a commercial motorcyclist who, while reportedly navigating at an uncontrollably high velocity, tragically collided with a fully loaded articulated truck transporting flour. Preliminary findings from an immediate on-site investigation suggest that the motorcyclist suffered a sudden and catastrophic brake malfunction, rendering him incapable of regaining vehicular control.

"As a consequence, he collided violently with the back of the moving trailer, resulting in immediate death. The LASTMA officials, who responded swiftly as the initial emergency team, quickly took charge of managing the subsequent confusion and securing the crash site," the statement partially read.

He mentioned that the truck driver escaped following the collision but was subsequently caught during a short pursuit.

Nevertheless, the driver was reportedly turned over to law enforcement right away. Meanwhile, the victim's body, which was underneath the truck, was retrieved and released to their family members who promptly arrived at the accident site.

In the statement released as LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki offered his sympathies to the family of the victim and emphasized the importance of commercial motorcyclists conducting routine maintenance inspections, with special attention paid to ensuring brake functionality.

He similarly encouraged the leaders of motorcycle associations throughout the state to step up their efforts in promoting awareness about safety regulations and following traffic laws.

"It is crucially important for operators of commercial motorcycles to take on more responsibility by conducting regular mechanical inspections, particularly focusing on vital parts like the braking system," Bakare-Oki stated.

He restated the state government’s policy limiting motorcycles from using main expressways and urged complete adherence to ensure public safety.
