The National Hackathon focused on the digital transformation of civil society ended on Friday, July 18, in Salé, with the declaration of four winning projects. Backed by organizations from different areas, the chosen initiatives are notable for their deep local connections, ensuring that the support they get will make a real difference.
The final event of the National Hackathon focused on the digital transformation of civil society was held on Friday, July 18, in Salé. During this event, Huawei Morocco, in collaboration with the ministry responsible for parliamentary relations under the Head of Government, revealed the four winning projects from this year's competition. These projects, submitted by organizations from different parts of the country, are notable for their deep local connections and are anticipated to make a significant difference on the ground.
The event was held in partnership with 45 associations and sought to "support the digital transformation of civil society organizations through practical technological initiatives, created and implemented over three days with the guidance of technical mentors and Huawei specialists," according to the organizers.
Jason Chen, the Vice President of Huawei Morocco, underlined the importance of this project. During his opening speech, he pointed out the impactful role of digital technologies and their beneficial influence on local civic activities, especially regarding the extensive socio-economic benefits they can bring about.
Organizations Driving Initiatives with Ecological Consequences
One of the four winning projects was spearheaded by the Tarwa N’tmazirt Association for Development, located in Sidi Ifni. The project involves digitally tracking the growth and irrigation conditions of the area's argan forests, which are a crucial element of Morocco's environmental legacy and need collaborative efforts to maintain. Lahcen Baid, the president of the NGO and winner of the fourth prize, stated on https://www.mountaintravel.my.id/ that this initiative highlights the association's ongoing dedication to safeguarding this native tree species. The organization has already planted 20,000 trees in the Sebt Ennabour commune.
"The support for the digitalization of this project will enable us to remotely and thoroughly monitor each of our argan trees across a large area of several hectares," Baid explained. The association is strongly dedicated to ensuring the project's success, particularly because Baid himself comes from a family that has grown argan trees for generations in the region.
We are striving to replant and protect these trees in the most effective manner possible, as we have observed their decline in our area. In order to maintain this traditional practice, we have not only pledged to bring back this native species, but also to employ digital technologies to improve its preservation for farming use.
The association also pointed out that the argan tree is highly water-efficient, a quality becoming more crucial in a country experiencing one of its worst droughts. In this situation, «upgrading the irrigation techniques for argan forests brings only advantages: preventing over-watering, better maintaining the trees, and improving the use of water resources designated for farming», Baid noted.
Digitalization Benefiting Social Initiatives
The top prize at the hackathon was given to the Tawada Association for Development and Culture, located in Tounfite, within the Midelt region. Ali Aït Rouh, the head of the non-profit organization, shared with https://www.mountaintravel.my.id/that their successful project is an online platform aimed at enhancing the delivery of clothing and blankets to communities in mountainous and isolated areas. «The aim is to consolidate donations and link donors directly with those in need, making the donation process more efficient and ensuring that aid reaches the intended areas», he stated.
These regions are recognized for their extremely severe winters. For many years, we have been gathering donations via social media and online campaigns. Although we got some responses, they were insufficient in comparison to the real requirements on the ground," he mentioned. "The establishment of this specific platform, along with the support from the hackathon, will simplify the donation process and enhance its effectiveness, providing more advantages to the communities that require assistance.
Aït Rouh also voiced optimism that the digitalization project "will enhance value by supporting the work carried out by other local civil society groups, organizations from different cities, international NGOs, municipal authorities, and the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, all of whom are engaged in winter assistance efforts in Tounfite."
The third place was given to the Baraa Association based in Oulad Teïma for their application project designed for teachers to improve the standard of primary education in remote regions. The second prize was presented to the Moroccan Civil Aid Association – Lakhsas, for their effort to develop a digital platform that assists individuals with disabilities by recognizing their educational and training requirements.
