Sam Larry Denies Role in Mohbad's Death Amid Backlash

AlmostTwo years following the tragic and contentious passing of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely recognized as Mohbad, which sparked extensive claims of bullying and harassment, Samson Balogun, known as Sam Larry, seems to be making significant efforts to restore his damaged public perception. His recent activities—such as an interview with a controversial online figure, VeryDarkMan, and a public appearance at Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s voting station during the local government elections—have been viewed by many analysts as part of a deliberate strategy to win back public support.

Larry, a recognized connection to the street-hop artist Naira Marley, was among those whose names were linked to the reported harassment of Mohbad prior to the singer's passing in September 2023.

Following the singer's passing, public sentiment shifted strongly against the pair, as numerous fans blamed them for contributing—either directly or indirectly—to the emotional and physical distress the deceased singer is said to have endured.

In a recent conversation with VDM, Sam Larry tried to clarify the situation, denying that he ever harassed Mohbad, and stating that their final conflict was about a financial issue.

He spoke in pidgin English, "I don't bully Mohbad. It's money he owes me, N2m. It's me who helped him when he had problems with Eleko. I can't bully someone I've helped."

Nevertheless, the interview did not achieve the desired outcome. Instead of generating empathy or comprehension, it led to additional criticism and mockery. Numerous online observers considered his justifications contradictory and self-centered, particularly in light of the previous viral videos showing him interfering with one of Mohbad's music video productions; a clip that played a major role in the public anger directed at him last year.

In an effort to create more separation from the ongoing controversy, Sam Larry was recently spotted alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the local government elections held on July 12, 2025, in Lagos. He was captured at the governor's polling station, interacting with young people and taking pictures.

Nevertheless, the release had minimal impact on public opinion. On social media, users filled the comment sections of posts featuring the images with insults and doubtful comments. One user wrote, “Image laundering doesn't start,” while another joked, “From bullying Mohbad to supporting democracy. Life hits you fast.”

Although he has disabled comments on certain Instagram posts, user-shared screenshots reveal that every time Sam Larry uploads content, he faces a flood of sarcastic remarks and criticism.

Rest! Your conscience is still loud," a fan remarked on a recent video featuring the socialite dancing. Another person wrote, "No matter how you cover yourself in white, we know the real you.

Another analyst stated, "It's impossible to handle public relations with a compromised moral compass. Let the legal process take its path."

This isn't the first instance of Sam Larry trying to "rebuild his public image." In late 2023, he posted a video stating he had no problems with Mohbad and that they had resolved their conflicts before the artist's death. This also faced doubt, particularly because it occurred just after he was released from police custody.

Meanwhile, although Naira Marley has been mostly silent in recent months, his quietness has not prevented him from facing criticism as well. His social media updates continue to draw angry responses, with some fans promising never to listen to his music again. Even though he has claimed innocence, many still link him to the alleged intimidation that Mohbad experienced while signed to Marlian Music.
