
Balasore (Odisha) [India], July 19 (ANI): Afact-finding teamof the University Grants Commission (UGC) arrived in Balasoreto examine the events leading to the death of a 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, who was reportedly subjected to extended sexual harassment by the Head of Department (HoD).
The victim tried to set herself on fire on July 12 at the college campus, suffering burns covering more than 90 percent of her body, and died from her injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on July 14.
Speaking with the press on Friday, team member ProfessorSushma Yadavsaid, "We have arrived at this point and have started (investigation) today. We have reviewed the documents and spoken with the relevant officers. We also talked to students. We will continue tomorrow. We are afact-finding teamso we will witness the full details. We will attempt to gather information from increasingly more individuals to ensure that such incidents do not occur again.
The senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Pratap Jenacriticized the state government's reaction to the event and stated, "Crimes against women are becoming more frequent daily in"OdishaWe call for a judicial investigation into this matter. Instead, they conducted an inquiry by the crime branch led by a DSP. We express our criticism of this.
Responding to the same event,BJD Vice President Debi Prasad Mishrastated that the party conducted a silent demonstration throughout the state, as "Silence holds greater strength".
"BJDToday, they organized a silent protest because silence can be more impactful. This case has tarnished the reputation of the state.Odisha. Our student and youth wing has also taken to the streets in demonstration. We reaffirm our position that a judicial investigation should be launched in this matter. We will keep up this campaign until the people's demands are met.Odishawas fulfilled," Mishra said to ANI.
Meanwhile, OdishaPresident of Congress Bhakta Charan Das asked for a response fromOdishaChief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi was questioned about why an FIR was not filed in this case.
"That girl also approached a state Minister for help, but he didn't assist her. If he had helped her file an FIR, she would be here today. You can use the law to imprison children, yet you cannot request the police to file an FIR to protect one of your own students. Can Mohan Majhi explain why an FIR was not registered in this case? Do the Education Minister, MPs, or ICC (Internal Complaints Committee) dare to justify why no FIR was filed?" Das said.

OdishaCongress representative Ajay Kumar Lallu accused the state government of attempting to withhold justice from the college student. He claimed that the government was employing force to quell demonstrations and emphasized that the Congress would not be deterred.
