A Unique Experience Gone Wrong
A Sydney couple found themselves in an unexpected situation after booking a luxurious five-star suite in a Chinese hotel, only to end up dealing with a flooded room. The incident highlights the importance of understanding instructions and the potential consequences of misinterpreting them.
Graham Bernard, 49, and his wife Jodie were drawn to the Iseya Panoramic Hotel in Chongqing, which offers stunning 360-degree views of the city known as the "5D city." One of the main attractions of their room was a wet-edge bathtub that resembled a small pool. They had seen the hotel on TikTok and were excited about the unique experience it promised.
After arriving in July, the couple left their room for a day and asked the hotel staff to fill the bathtub for them while they were away. Upon returning, they put on their swimwear, opened a bottle of champagne, and relaxed in the tub. However, things quickly took a turn when they started receiving messages about water and flooding.
The hotel contacted the couple, asking if there was any bathtub water in their room. A message read, “Could you please turn off the water in the bathtub? There will be a water leakage downstairs after it is full.” Graham explained that he didn’t think they needed to turn off the water in a wet-edge pool, as they weren’t doing anything reckless.
As the situation escalated, the doorbell rang, and the couple was met with a scene reminiscent of a crime investigation. A manager and three cleaners arrived, pointing out a sign in Chinese that instructed guests to turn off the taps if the pool was full. They informed the couple that the flooding was seeping down to lower floors.
Footage of the Australians working with the staff to remove buckets of water from the tub was shared on social media, garnering over 18 million views. The video sparked mixed reactions from viewers, with some expressing concern and others finding humor in the situation.
Some comments criticized the couple’s actions, stating that they were inconveniencing others. Others, however, appreciated the humor and pointed out that the design flaw could have been confusing for guests. Despite the initial chaos, the hotel staff later clarified that the issue was not the couple’s fault. The problem was caused by a drain blockage, and the hotel apologized for the inconvenience.
Graham and Jodie were pleased with the hotel’s response, noting that the staff were great and apologized every time they saw them. They even used the bath again after the incident.
Chongqing, known as China's "5D city," is characterized by its complex network of highways, bridges, and rail lines that run above and below each other. This layered transport system creates a unique urban environment. The city is often referred to as a "vertical city" due to its mountainous terrain, where buildings are constructed on steep slopes and different floors can serve as ground level.
While the couple’s experience was certainly unusual, it serves as a reminder of the importance of following instructions and being aware of potential risks, especially in unfamiliar environments. Their story also highlights the power of social media in sharing unexpected and entertaining moments with a global audience.
