A New Way to Retire: Living on a Cruise Ship
Villa Vie Residences, a unique residential cruise line, is introducing an innovative concept that allows retirees to live permanently at sea. The initiative, known as the "Endless Horizons" scheme, offers a lifestyle where individuals can travel the world while enjoying the comforts of home. This floating community is made possible aboard the MV Odyssey, which has been sailing since October 2024.
The MV Odyssey provides passengers with the opportunity to explore over 425 ports and 147 countries within three-and-a-half years. This includes more than 100 tropical islands, where travelers can stay for extended periods of 2-3 days, allowing for deeper cultural immersion and a more meaningful travel experience.
Passengers have several options when it comes to their living arrangements. They can rent, own, or lease a cabin for life, ensuring they have a permanent place to call home while traveling. The cruise line recently launched the Golden Passport programme, which takes this concept further by enabling passengers to live and retire permanently on the Odyssey.
This programme allows travelers to repeat the three-and-a-half-year journey on a loop for as long as they like, becoming part of a vibrant floating community. According to Kathy Villalba, CEO of Villa Vie Residences, the Golden Passport makes the dream of traveling the world both possible and affordable in a way that the cruise and travel industries have never seen before.
Pricing and Inclusions
The Golden Passport offers an age-tiered pricing model, starting at $99,999 (€85,885.1) for passengers aged 90 and above, and going up to $399,999 (€343,522.3) for travelers between 55 and 60. All packages include essential services such as housekeeping, dining, internet, entertainment, annual medical check-ups, laundry, and alcoholic beverages like beer and wine with meals.
Additionally, all fees, including service charges and port taxes, are included in the price. Passengers can also invite friends and family on board for a $129 (€110.8) fee per day. While the Odyssey is currently the only ship owned by Villa Vie Residences, the Golden Passport will be valid across its entire fleet, potentially allowing passengers to enjoy future ships if they are added.
Addressing Concerns About Retirement
As people retire, one of their biggest fears is outliving their money. The Golden Passport aims to eliminate this uncertainty by offering a single payment that secures a lifetime of adventure. Mike Petterson, founder of Villa Vie Residences, emphasized this point, highlighting the security and freedom that the programme provides.
However, not everyone may be ready to commit their life savings to a retirement cruise. Some passengers may still be wary due to the Odyssey’s past troubles. Before its final launch in October, the Villa Vie Odyssey faced multiple delays. The ship, which is over 30 years old, required extensive testing and upgrades to ensure seaworthiness. These challenges led to some passengers being stranded in Belfast, Northern Ireland, for months, waiting for the ship to depart.
Euronews Travel spoke to one couple who eventually returned to the US from Belfast after months of waiting. Although the cruise line initially covered expenses like hotels and allowed passengers to visit other cities, this support was eventually discontinued, causing additional strain on those affected.
Alternatives for Those Not Ready
For those not yet ready to commit to a full-time cruise lifestyle, other cruise lines offer extended voyages that provide a taste of life at sea. Companies like Princess Cruises and Oceania Cruises offer months-long cruises, allowing travelers to experience the benefits of extended travel without the same level of financial commitment.
While the Golden Passport presents an exciting opportunity for retirees, it also highlights the importance of careful planning and consideration. As the cruise industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how such innovative concepts will shape the future of travel and retirement.
