The premier platform in Africa for young people and women in climate leadership, the Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), has revealed the upcoming second edition set to take place on October 6–7, 2025.
The gathering taking place at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra is titled “Young Voices, Innovative Ideas, Greater Impact for Africa.” It aims to continue the achievements of its 2023 launch, which drew significant involvement from African leaders, international collaborators, and local initiatives.
The 2025 event is anticipated to bring together over 500 participants from governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, development groups, and climate-related entities throughout Africa and the diaspora.
Introduced in 2023 by the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP), AFRIWOCC has rapidly evolved from a policy discussion group into a continuous initiative promoting equitable climate efforts.
Its first edition, with the theme "Amplifying the Voices of Women and Children in Climate Action," included former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Samira Bawumia, former Second Lady; Monica Geingos, First Lady of Namibia; and Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, former President of the African Development Bank.
The first event ended with a six-point declaration that supported gender-sensitive and youth-friendly policies, adaptation funding, and community resilience approaches. From that point on, AFRIWOCC has gained widespread recognition across the continent as a platform for climate solutions that focus on women, children, and marginalized groups.
Although Africa produces less than 4% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, it faces a significantly higher share of the consequences of climate change. Floods, land degradation, increasing sea levels, and droughts keep on endangering ways of life and access to food, with women and children typically being the hardest hit.
Ghana has recently experienced sudden flood outbreaks, shoreline degradation, and unpredictable rain patterns, which have led to the displacement of people and affected farming activities. In this context, AFRIWOCC 2025 seeks to serve as a forum for policy discussions and a hub for real-world solutions.
Key features of the conference will involve discussions on climate funding, Africa's COP approaches, and policies that span generations; displays of innovations led by young people and women; specialized sessions focusing on green employment, adolescent well-being, and gender-aware infrastructure; and a senior-level AFRIWOCC Pledge Board aimed at gathering pledges for equitable climate efforts.
The 2025 conference will highlight key figures shaping Africa's climate and development initiatives. These include H.E. Ramatoulaye Diallo N’diay from the Great Green Wall of Africa and H.E. Wamkele Mene of the AfCFTA Secretariat as main speakers, along with special guests Tenioye Majekodunni and Damilola Ogunbiyi, who are both advocates for climate resilience and sustainable energy. A unique concert will also take place to involve attendees and the broader community.
AFRIWOCC 2025 welcomes African youth leaders, business owners, government officials, local groups, private sector representatives, development collaborators, and international climate advocates. Information on registration, as well as chances to submit research articles, showcase exhibits, and secure sponsorships, can be found atwww.afriwocc.org.
