The National Universities Commission has approved full accreditation for 34 academic programs within four faculties at the newly founded Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti.
The FUTES Registrar, Mr. Oluwole Dada, who shared this information in a statement issued in Iyin Ekiti on Thursday, mentioned that the accreditation has enabled the official start of academic activities for the 2025/2026 academic term at the institution.
This Registrar mentioned that it carried out a week-long facility assessment process involving four NUC teams who examined the university's laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, offices, hostels, library, clinic, restrooms, staff buses, and teaching equipment, including Hitachi boards.
He said, "The exercise sought to evaluate the institution's readiness and its ability to provide top-tier training in science, engineering, and technology, computing and information technology, and environmental sciences."
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, who showed satisfaction with the successful confirmation, called it "a significant step that confirms the university's ability to deliver education for the 21st century."
Aribisala urged applicants to switch their chosen university to FUTES on the JAMB platform, promising that admissions would be strictly determined by merit.
"We are here to pursue academic excellence and this is the benchmark we aim to establish right from the beginning. Students who achieved good results in JAMB, WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB will be admitted strictly based on merit, without any bias or partiality," he stated.
The VC warned parents and guardians not to rely on admission agents, stating, "We want to make it clear to the public that the university does not have any agents for admissions or payments. Our website is available to all to obtain accurate information."
He recommended that those seeking admission should only use information confirmed by the institution's official website,www.futes.edu.ng, or to reach out to the Registrar's office for assistance.
As per the registrar, the programs recognized by NUC for the Faculty of Engineering and Technology comprised Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering.
He mentioned the following disciplines under the Faculty of Science: Biochemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Forensic Science, Geology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Statistics, Animal and Environmental Biology, Biotechnology, Science Laboratory Technology, and Environmental Management and Toxicology.
Dada mentioned that the recognized programs within the Faculty of Environmental Sciences consist of Architecture, Building Technology, Estate Management and Valuation, Environmental Management, Industrial Design, Quantity Surveying, Surveying and Geoinformatics, and Urban and Regional Planning.
He listed the following disciplines for the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology: Software Engineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, and Information Communication and Technology.
Remember that President Bola Tinubu approved two distinct bills on February 20, 2025, which created FUTES, Iyin Ekiti, and the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, in Osun State.
As stated by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu emphasized that "specialized institutions will meet the educational requirements of the population, promote research and innovation, and support the nation's broader economic growth and development."
He stated, "The institutions will act as platforms for cultivating agriculture, science, and technology experts and boosting Nigeria's position in the global economy."
In March, the President named Senator Binta Garba as Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the university's Governing Council.
Onanuga characterized Garba as "an experienced politician, businessperson, and administrator who stood for the Adamawa North Senatorial District in the Senate between 2015 and 2019 and held continuous positions in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2011."
